Glucosamine for dogs: does it work and how much?

Updated 7 November 2026. 5 minute read.

Short answer: Glucosamine is a building block of cartilage. Many vets suggest it for older, stiff or large dogs as part of a wider plan. The research is mixed, so give it daily for 6 to 8 weeks before judging it, and see your vet for limping or pain.

What glucosamine is

Glucosamine is a natural compound the body uses to build cartilage, the smooth layer that cushions the ends of bones in a joint. Supplements usually make it from shellfish shells, which matters if your dog has a shellfish allergy.

It's often paired with chondroitin, which helps cartilage hold water, and sometimes with turmeric, green-lipped mussel or omega-3 from fish oil.

Does it work for dogs?

Honestly, the evidence is mixed. Some studies in dogs show owners and vets noticing easier movement after several weeks. Others find little difference compared with a dummy treatment. Omega-3 from fish oil has the strongest research behind it for joint comfort.

In practice, many UK vets are happy for owners to try glucosamine because it's very safe. The fairest test is to give it every day for 6 to 8 weeks and watch for specific changes: getting up more easily, keeping up on walks, managing the stairs or the car.

Which dogs it's usually given to

Dogs over about seven, large and giant breeds such as Labradors, retrievers, German Shepherds and Rottweilers, very active working or sporting dogs, and dogs that are carrying extra weight.

Keeping your dog lean does more for their joints than any supplement. Even a few kilos less weight takes real strain off the hips and elbows.

How much to give

Follow the amount on the pack, which goes by your dog's weight. Products differ in strength, so don't compare by number of tablets. Compare by milligrams of glucosamine per daily portion.

Some makers suggest double the amount for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then the normal daily amount after that. Never go above the stated dose.

What to look for in a UK supplement

The amount of glucosamine per daily portion is printed in the analytical constituents. Look for chondroitin alongside it, a flavour your dog will actually eat, and made-in-the-UK or GMP manufacturing.

Be wary of products that promise to cure arthritis. Pet supplements in the UK are complementary feeds, and they can support joints but not treat disease.

Common questions

How long does glucosamine take to work in dogs?

Give it every day for 6 to 8 weeks before deciding. Cartilage changes slowly, so you won't see a difference in a few days.

Is glucosamine safe for dogs?

It's generally very safe. Most glucosamine comes from shellfish, so avoid it if your dog has a shellfish allergy. If your dog is diabetic or on medication, check with your vet first.

Can I give my dog human glucosamine?

It's better not to. Human products can contain sweeteners such as xylitol, which is poisonous to dogs, and the strengths aren't set for dogs.

Should glucosamine be given with food?

Giving it with a meal is easiest and kinder on the stomach. Chewable tablets can also be given as a treat.

When should I see a vet instead?

If your dog is limping, yelping, has a swollen joint, or the stiffness came on suddenly. Those need a vet check, not a supplement.

This page is general advice, not a diagnosis. If you're worried about your dog, speak to your vet.
