Joint supplements for Labradors and large breeds

Updated 7 November 2026. 5 minute read.

Short answer: Large breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Rottweilers are prone to hip and elbow problems. Many owners start a joint supplement from middle age, or earlier for very active dogs. Keeping them lean matters even more.

Why big dogs have more joint trouble

Bigger dogs put more load through every joint, and several large breeds are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, where the joint doesn't form perfectly as the puppy grows. That uneven wear often turns into osteoarthritis later in life.

Labradors also love their food, and extra weight is one of the biggest causes of joint strain in the breed.

When to start a joint supplement

There's no fixed age, but many owners start around five to seven years old for large breeds, or earlier for working dogs, agility dogs and dogs that have had a joint injury. Ask your vet if your dog has had hip or elbow scoring.

Don't give adult joint supplements to growing puppies without asking your vet. Large-breed puppies need a proper large-breed puppy food more than anything else.

What else protects big dogs' joints

Keep them slim: you should be able to feel their ribs easily. Avoid lots of jumping and stairs in young large-breed puppies. Build fitness with steady walks rather than weekend marathons. Use rugs on slippery floors and a ramp for the car as they age.

Choosing a supplement for a big dog

Check that the daily amount for your dog's weight is practical. Some products need several tablets a day for a 35 kg dog, so look at cost per day, not just the pack price. Chewable, meat-flavoured tablets are easiest for most Labradors.

Common questions

What age should a Labrador start joint supplements?

Many owners start from about five to seven, or earlier for very active or working dogs. Ask your vet, especially if your dog has known hip or elbow issues.

Are joint supplements worth it for German Shepherds?

German Shepherds are prone to hip problems, so many owners use one as part of a joint care plan alongside weight control and sensible exercise. Give it 6 to 8 weeks to judge.

Can a supplement prevent hip dysplasia?

No. Dysplasia is largely down to genetics and how the puppy grows. Good puppy food, controlled growth and sensible exercise matter most.

How do I know if my big dog's joints hurt?

Look for slowness getting up, lagging on walks, avoiding stairs or the car, and licking a joint. Limping or yelping needs a vet.
